New Direct Observational Evidence for Kicks in SNe

We present an updated list of direct strong evidence in favour of kicks being imparted to newborn neutron stars. In particular we discuss the new cases of evidence resulting from recent observations of the X-ray binary Circinus X-1 and the newly discovered binary radio pulsar PSR J1141-6545. Comment on "A non-interacting low-mass black hole -- giant star binary system"

Thompson et al. (Reports, 1 November 2019, p. 637, Science) interpreted the unseen companion of the red giant star 2MASS J05215658+4359220 as most likely a black hole. We argue that if the red giant is about one solar mass, its companion can be a close binary consisting of two main-sequence stars. Nucleotide sequence and genomic organization of an ophiovirus associated with lettuce big-vein disease

The complete nucleotide sequence of an ophiovirus associated with lettuce big-vein disease has been elucidated. The genome consisted of four RNA molecules of approximately 7ò8, 1ò7, 1ò5 and 1ò4 kb. Virus particles were shown to contain nearly equimolar amounts of RNA molecules of both polarities. The 5'- and 3'-terminal ends of the RNA molecules are largely, but not perfectly, complementary to each other. The virus genome contains seven open reading frames. Database searches with the putative viral products revealed homologies with the RNA-dependent RNA polymerases of rhabdoviruses and Ranunculus white mottle virus, and the capsid protein of Citrus psorosis virus. The gene encoding the viral polymerase appears to be located on the RNA segment 1, while the nucleocapsid protein is encoded by the RNA3. No significant sequence similarities were observed with other viral proteins. In spite of the morphological resemblance with species in the genus Tenuivirus, the ophioviruses appear not to be evolutionary closely related to this genus nor any other viral genus

Economische impact WK Afstanden 2012

Jaarlijks organiseert de Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaatsenrijders Bond (KNSB) naast een aantal World Cups ook een groot internationaal schaatskampioenschap. Dit varieert van de EK of WK allround, de WK sprint of de WK afstanden. De vaste locatie is ijsstadion Thialf in Heerenveen, Friesland. In 2012 werden van 22 tot en met 25 maart voor de tweede keer in de historie de WK afstanden in Thialf gehouden. Sportief was het een enorm succesvol toernooi voor Nederland. Nederland veroverde vijf gouden, vijf zilveren en vier bronzen medailles. In vier dagen tijd genoten meer dan 30.000 toeschouwers van dit topevenement. De Hanzehogeschool Groningen en Fontys Economische Hogeschool Tilburg hebben onderzoek gedaan naar de economische impact, het bezoekersprofiel en de tevredenheid van bezoekers. Voor het onderzoek zijn vragenlijsten afgenomen onder bezoekers van het evenement en is documentatie gebruikt vanuit de organisatie over bestedingen vanuit sponsoren, deelnemers en organisatie. Hierbij is gebruik gemaakt van de richtlijnen van de Werkgroep Evaluatie Sportevenementen (WESP). De economische impact van de WK afstanden voor de provincie Friesland was € 2.081.000. In en rondom Thialf waren de additionele bestedingen van bezoekers € 903.000. Daarbij kwamen overnachtingen voor bezoekers € 471.000 en deelnemers € 298.000. Additionele organisatorische bestedingen waren € 409.000. Ook voor de gemeente Heerenveen is er een aanzienlijke economische impact, namelijk € 1.574.000. Deze economische impact is ten opzichte van andere sportevenementen behoorlijk te noemen. Aangetekend moet worden dat overige bestedingen vanuit teams en media niet achterhaald konden worden
